Use your bills and fuel records
Have your electricity use in kWh and fuel quantities, such as litres, ready for the year you are reporting. You will also need emission factors: the conversion figures that turn those quantities into emissions. Our factor guide shows where to find them. No account is needed to calculate.
If the draft already has a saved calculation, it opens with those inputs. Applying replaces the energy and emissions fields listed in the calculator. It keeps the rest of your draft. Cancelling leaves the draft unchanged.
What do the results mean?
Energy use is shown in megawatt-hours (MWh); 1 MWh equals 1,000 kWh. Emissions are shown in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e), a unit that combines the warming effects of different greenhouse gases.
Scope 1 means direct emissions, such as burning fuel in equipment you operate. Scope 2 covers generating purchased energy. The calculator uses the location-based method for Scope 2, reflecting the grid or energy supply serving your site.

This is an energy calculation, not a complete company carbon footprint. It does not calculate refrigerant leakage, industrial process emissions, a full Scope 3 inventory or market-based Scope 2. Add relevant emissions from other sources to your final disclosure, with supporting records.
Choose factors for your operations
Fuel defaults use the UK DESNZ 2026 full set. Check the specification: 100% mineral diesel is not the same as a blended road fuel. Replace the defaults where a different fuel, country or reporting year requires it.
For electricity, enter a suitable grid factor in kg CO₂e per kWh and its reference year. For district energy, use the relevant supplier factor. The calculator asks you to keep a source for each factor and confirm the assumptions before applying the result.
A renewable electricity contract does not change a location-based grid factor. See the GHG Protocol Scope 2 guidance for the distinction from market-based reporting.
